You’ve probably seen this, but it’s astounding:
The new national poll from Public Policy Polling (D) has an astonishing number about paranoia among the GOP base: Republicans do not think President Obama actually won the 2008 election — instead, ACORN stole it.
I remember before the election last year, in the last debate, I think, John McCain said that he was afraid that ACORN was:
“on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history” and “may be destroying the fabric of democracy.”
Huh? Oh yeah, that’s when they were upset that some ACORN workers were guilty of voter registration fraud (VRF), which is not the same as voter fraud. VRF is when workers submit fraudulent names on voter registration forms. Some are obviously fake like “Mickey Mouse” or “Tony Roma,” but other can be real sounding names submitted by lazy and unethical people who are trying to quickly complete their quota of registrations. Since states require ID to vote now, it’s highly unlikely that many people showed up to vote using the fake names.
But John McCain lit a fire. Since then, ACORN has become the bogeyman of the GOP and the teabaggers. You see, according to Glenn Beck and his tea party people, ACORN is guilty of a number of crimes. First they stole the election for Obama, then they stole the election for Franken, and then they got Bill Owens elected in New York earlier this month.
The problem is that there is no evidence — not even anecdotal that ACORN had any hand in committing fraud or getting people fraudulently elected. McCain’s fire has turned into a blaze that is consuming the GOP. For no reason, 52% of Republicans think that ACORN stole the election for Obama. Imagine their if Obama won the presidency after a heavily contested state run by his brother came in for Obama by some 500 votes only after an intervention of the Supreme Court containing member that Obama’s father had appointed. There would be bloody and God-awful teabaggy violence all over the country.
