Again, I’m very saddened by the events in Honduras. Its kind people deserve much more than they are getting.
I’ve been trying to sort through what’s happening there, so let me state the situation as I understand it.
First Zelaya is something of an authoritarian jerk. Before the coup, his approval rating was around 30%. His affinity for Chavez was not serving him well and ordering an unconstitutional referendum after the courts said he didn’t have the authority to do so created a huge problem.
But then, those who carried out the removal of Zelaya are also jerks. There are mechanisms in the Honduran constitution to remove a president from office that don’t involve the army breaking down the President’s door in the middle of the night to send him into exile.
Neither side is pure.
But that being said, militaries and courts really have no business in overturning election results. If all parties had followed the Honduran constitution, Zelaya would have stayed in power until early next year at which time a new president would take control.
The Fox News crowd is hailing the coup as a wonderful thing. They are mad that Obama stepped in to defend a democratically elected president whose policies are not all that great for the United States. They love Micheletti.
And Micheletti says there was no coup at the same time he’s shutting down newspapers and radio stations while “suspending” five rights as guaranteed to Hondurans in their consitution:
1. The right to protest.
2. Freedom in one’s home from unwarranted search, seizure and arrest.
3. Freedom of association.
4. Guarantees of rights of due process while under arrest.
5. Freedom of transit in the country.
So Micheletti is pro-freedom and pro-human rights, but he has suspended many of those rights.
Zelaya is an ass. Micheletti is also an ass.
The Honduran people are not asses, so they deserve much better. ‘
